Connecting Families to Resources, Emergency Assistance, and Stability
At United Way St. Croix and Red Cedar Valleys (UW Valleys), programs like 211 and the John Coughlin Hope Fund (JCHF) work together to help individuals and families navigate difficult situations and connect them to critical local support.
For many people, 211 is the first step.
When Dennis lost his job just before Thanksgiving 2025, everything changed for his family.
Dennis and Michelle had moved to Polk County with their two children in 2024, excited for a fresh start. Both were working full-time, and life in their new community was going well. Then, without warning, Dennis’s company shut down and all employees were laid off.
Over the next several months, the family used their savings to keep up with bills and provide a holiday for their children. But as time passed, financial pressure grew. They fell behind on rent and eventually received an eviction notice. Although Dennis had secured a new job, the position would not begin for another two weeks.
That is when he learned about 211.
After reaching out, Dennis spoke with a 211 Community Resource Specialist who helped him assess and prioritize his family’s immediate needs. Through 211, he was connected to local food resources and programs offering rental assistance. He was also referred to the UW Valleys John Coughlin Hope Fund.
Shortly after applying, Dennis received a call from a UW Valleys staff member who took the time to listen to his situation and explain how the Hope Fund could help. The family ultimately received $500 in rental assistance through JCHF, helping prevent eviction and stabilize their housing situation as Dennis prepared to return to work.

Stories like Dennis and Michelle’s highlight the growing need for support services across our region. Housing concerns and requests for assistance increased 20% across the UW Valleys service region from 2024 to 2025, and that trend continues into 2026.
Together, 211 and the John Coughlin Hope Fund help connect individuals and families to resources, financial assistance, and stability during difficult times. While 211 serves as a trusted connection point to local services, JCHF helps fill critical gaps when additional emergency support is needed.
